Origin of Crystal Chandeliers

Crystal chandeliers are as common as other expensive furniture and interior models, giving life to luxurious, classy buildings and structural design. Crystal-made chandelier provides distinctive reflections, adding glamour to the light that would roughly ensnare everyone?s eyes. Because of this feature, it is now one of the after sought interior decors in the market.

The use of crystal chandelier is dated back in 1150 A.D. in Europe. However there are notions that it originated from the place of the oldest civilization- China. European style during the ancient period is known for glitzy spendthrift peripheries. Shortly after the trend in Europe, Romans undertook their contribution for architectural concepts brought about by the renaissance view in the year 1400.

Baroque era in 1600 influenced the fashion and elegance of crystal chandelier?s assembly that implicated new affluent designs that can still be witnessed up to date. The Bourgeoisie or the ?middle class? in Europe during the Regency period in 1800 and 1830, were engaged in exhibiting Regency chandeliers showing the prosperity and splendor of the Bourgeoisie class.

During the Victorian era in 1849 to 1870, chandeliers grew heavier in furnishings and embellishments that were identified as Victorian crystal chandeliers. The decoration piece had enormously adorned every distinctive marvelous house.

The modern times had exerted influence on the designs of crystal chandelier, combining some styles including method of abstraction, providing sense of modernity to home?s interior decoration and giving more emphasis for appreciation. Recent made chandeliers are made of several materials like metals painted with gold, silver, bronze, and chrome. Some of the designs are combined with glass materials enhanced by the cutting-edge stylish lighting elements or candle holders within it. With the advanced tools and equipments nowadays, designers are given much chance to defy arts and craftsmanship.

Finding styles that suit one?s taste is as easy now as choosing a piece of clothes to wear. There are varieties of style to choose from. With the boosting of crystal chandelier market, people can already embellish their respective humble houses with the gift of art and make them look more like a hotel, museum, or a mansion. Chandelier can manipulate the motif of an interior decoration and add more spices to an idle-looking house interior. The house owner might want to get a set that does not demand for many light bulbs or choose a piece with so many provisions for lighting elements. Incorporating chandelier in a house interior decoration can inspire good reflections and designs. Some chandeliers can be made upon customer?s order with customer?s personal design, giving the home owner an opportunity to flaunt his own designing prowess and to display his flavor of art. According to manufacturers and sellers, majority of the buyers prefer crystal chandelier because of its flashing elegance and beauty, reflecting any lights that might come upon it. There are people who still desire for the Renaissance and Victorian type though.

During the past decades, crystal chandelier were only associated with middle class people who are fitted to enjoy the grandeur of its beauty; but as years pass by, the use of crystal chandelier for interior decoration had been wide opened to most contemporary houses and building structures around the world.

Tips For Shopping An Appropriate Chandelier

Chandeliers are customarily installed only in foyers or dining areas of grandiosely elegant homes, supposedly a housing interior embellishment exclusive to the rich. Elaborate chandeliers that comprise of cut crystal or glass have been considered as status symbols, a signature of affluence. These shimmering fixtures are classically massive, intricate and ornate, often making them suitable as centerpieces for a room. However, modern interior designers have been employing chandeliers of a wide spectrum of sizes and shapes for adorning almost any type of home, irrespective of dimensions and splendor. The aesthetic quality of chandeliers can render an inviting atmosphere and an arty accent to any home space. Chandeliers have been popularly hung over living areas, sleeping quarters, breakfast nooks, and kitchens in addition to traditionally familiar places.

These days, chandeliers do not necessarily have to be sophisticated or classy. Besides the conventional formal-type crystal chandeliers, one can now find stained-glass teacup, colonial, revival, and various other contemporary varieties of chandeliers for embellishing home interiors. While some of these contemporary designs remain to be expansive, spanning at least eight feet in diameter, others can be found no wider than two to three feet in diameter.

Chandeliers can cost a lot of money irrespective of their particular style. Thus, it is quite important to find one that appropriately accentuates your home. Top chandelier designers recommend home owners to choose a chandelier that harmonizes with the time period and overall architectural motif of the house rather than getting trendy and selecting the current fad in style. For an average home owner, buying a new chandelier every time decorative tastes evolve is really not a luxury.

When shopping for chandeliers, the first aspect to consider is the size of the room where it is meant to be hung. Fortunately, there is a general rule of thumb that will guide the appropriate choice. The chandelier should follow a simple proportion rule: approximately two inches in diameter for every foot of the room?s total width. For example, if the living area is fifteen feet wide all in all, the appropriate diameter of the chandelier should be about 30 inches. But take note that the complexity of the chandelier can also project the illusion of being large?an extremely elaborate one will appear larger in the room than it actually is. Hence, one can also make the necessary adjustments to the estimated diameter to take this factor into consideration.

The second aspect to take into account is the height as well as the structure of the furniture in the room. Suppose that a certain tall hutch is fixed in the living room. It is not advised to hang the chandelier directly above this piece of furniture because it will render a cluttered look to the room. In relation to this concern, there must be enough gap for head space so that running or bumping into the chandelier when crossing the room will not occur.

Another aspect to consider is if the chandelier is meant to be hung above a second centerpiece in the room, such as a dining room table. The dimensions of the chandelier should be in proportion to that centerpiece. Another rule of thumb to abide by is to select a chandelier size which measures approximately a third of the diameter of the centerpiece.

The last aspect to be accounted for is lighting. If the chandelier is planned to be the primary source of light in an area, its brightness should be sufficient to shed light uniformly to the whole area. Furthermore, the chandelier?s brightness should not overwhelm a second light source. One way to get over this quandary is to install a dimmer switch that allows adjustment to the amount of light the chandelier gives off. One can also utilize table lamps, floor lamps, and corner lamps to aid in illuminating the room.

Chandeliers - Not Just For Dining Table Anymore!

Who honestly doesn?t love the elegance and refinement of a gorgeous chandelier? For centuries, chandeliers were found in the finest homes, castles, and palaces throughout the world. The crystal chandelier literally became an iconic status symbol and many can still be found that are just simply too large to be displayed in any home that people actually live in. However, chandeliers are made for use in ?real people? homes and the vast majority hang above the dining room table.

Chandeliers are a variety of ceiling fixtures that either provide illumination directly downward or bounce the light upwards where it will then reflect downwards towards the room. In other words, the bulbs are either facing downwards or they are inverted along with the lamp shades in an effort which tends to reduce glare and diffuse light to a greater degree.

Another defining feature of the chandelier is the use of multiple light bulbs and lampshades. Unlike many ceiling fixtures which may use a single bulb with a high wattage output in order to generate the necessary ambient lighting to properly illuminate a space, the chandelier uses several bulbs. This feature of the chandelier allows for the use of bulbs with lower wattage to produce the same or more illumination with less glare and eye strain.

The multiple bulbs and high ambient lighting output tend to make chandeliers the perfect choices for dining rooms. Placed above the dining room table which is generally situated as the focal point of the room anyway, a chandelier naturally suits the space and sparse d?cor found in the typical dining room. The only problem is?.nobody uses the dining room anymore!!

With the exception of family reunions and other rare occasions, the dining room is not the typical eating area for most people on an average night. It is not uncommon for family members to eat at different times and it is just plain impractical on most nights to use the formal dining room. Thus, the beauty of many chandeliers are simply lost or wasted for much of the year in many homes!

Therefore, it is time to consider using chandeliers in other rooms so that they can be appreciated and used as they were intended rather than simply lying dormant for much of the year! Chandeliers make perfect lighting fixtures above stairways and can illuminate this dangerous area while also adding a decorative element to what would otherwise be an essentially featureless area.

Chandeliers are absolutely perfect in foyers or entryways and make the perfect introduction to your home while also illuminating an area that is often neglected in many lighting schemes. Or, if you really want to get the most use out of your chandelier while still illuminating a very high-traffic area, why not buy one for the living room? When you really consider the wide assortment of styles and designs available on many online retailer websites, there is certainly a chandelier out there that will make the perfect addition to your living room (or any room other than the dining room where it may lie dormant!) in a style and price range that will please everyone!

Evolution of Crystal Chandelier Lighting

Crystal chandeliers establish atmosphere in building interiors. This fact holds true today as it did a thousand years ago. People started ornamenting their light sources with crystals from very early on. Initially, crystals are installed on lighting elements for primarily practical reasons. Crystals possess a high degree of reflection and refraction, which gave them a high optical capability of scattering light to a wider area inside a room. But it did not take long before crystals had evolved into an essential ornamental component?the birth of crystal chandeliers. Each historical era has contributed a unique rationale or perspective behind the design concepts of the crystal chandeliers that we witness today. Chinese culture was perhaps one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in human history. Crystal chandelier designs in this era are classified as ?Oriental style.? Original forms of this style of crystal chandeliers can be traced back to the year 1150 A.D., which provided a large intensity of inspiration to European designers. An Oriental style chandelier is characterized by flamboyant built lavished with extravagant fringes.

The Renaissance era contributed the ?rebirth? of ancient Roman architectural concepts, which sprouted from Florence in Italy in 1400?s. Notable examples of Renaissance crystal chandeliers can be seen today at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Doges? palace in Venice. Original renaissance-style chandelier designs initiated the use of ?crystal candles with replicas of buds and curving arms.?

The year 1600 marked the beginning of the Baroque era. Famous painters that emerged during the Baroque period include Rubens and Rembrandt. Baroque architecture is distinctively expansive, attempting to open up space to infinity. The Baroque designs are derived from the richness that flourished during the Baroque epoch. These expansive ephemeral concepts developed during the Baroque resonate through time and is probably the reason that it still has a commanding influence on modern day designs of crystal chandeliers and lighting fixtures.

The Regency epoch is the name given to a brief period between 1800 and 1830 that witnessed the rise of the Bourgeoisie or the ?middle class? in Europe. Regency chandeliers are exhibited in middle-class salons, demonstrating the power of the budding Bourgeoisie class. Regency chandelier designs feature ostentatious and massive, and fragile linear ensembles as well.

The Victorian epoch prospered in England from 1840 to 1870, a period when Europe was engaged in historicism. Victorian crystal chandeliers are characteristically heavy, and have illuminated the most magnificent houses of the world.

Developed in central Europe at the turn of the century, Art Nouveau produced the exhibition pavilion fro the Viennese Succession as well as the Metro entrances that align on underground passage to Paris. Art Nouveau crystal chandeliers are distinguished by the consistent use of floral ornaments.

The period of Modernism emphasize reason and abstraction as the primary values in Modern Art. The influence of this period is manifest in linear and functional architectural designs that persist until the present. Two of the founding institutions of Modernism, Gropius and Kandinsky, have established the prevalent concepts of today?s crystal chandelier designs.

Strass Swarovski Crystal Chandeliers - Elegance Into Your Home

The beauty of crystal chandeliers is irrefutable. Difficult it is to deny the aesthetic value these objects bring into home and building interiors. Crystal chandeliers are interior conversation pieces that have been enchanting visual senses way back from the 17th century. While there are many different types of crystal available today, one type of crystal stands above the rest?the Strass crystal, which is manufactured by Swarovski. The Strass crystal is considerably world-renowned as the finest crystal human kind has ever laid eyes on. From its raw form, the crystal is machine cut and then hand polished. An invisible optical layer coated on the surface of the crystal gives that glittering effect. Strass Swarovski crystals are used annually in the design of the inimitable Swarovski Crystal Palace Collections. The eye-catching crystal chandelier designs based on the Strass Swarovski have been commenced in 2002, the most recent presentation of which occurred in April 2006. Several designers from around the world have brought to fruition crystal chandeliers anyone can only dream about before. Modern-day chandelier designer Ferrucio Laviani exhibited the chandelier he dubbed as ?Yoga? in 2005, for which he brought together a hundred crystals of assorted pastel shades and enclosed them in an exquisitely shaped gold frame. The shape of resembles that of a standard children?s top. A toy it may seem but this chandelier is certainly not one toy you would want your children to tinker around with. This crystal chandelier is illuminated by halogen bulbs that emit off a soothing and spellbound glow mixture of colors and crystal texture.

Chris Levine was the brains behind the ?Vertigo crystal chandelier design. Levine?s masterpiece projects the visual effect of old-style chandeliers, just like those one might spot in ballrooms. The unique thing about ?Vertigo? is that it is illumined by laser lights throughout the crystal arrays. The end result is a distinctive visual display that is only possible with Strass Swarovski crystals.

Fashion designers Bruno Basso and Christopher Brooke worked in tandem to design ?Science & Fiction? in 2006. This crystal chandelier?s shape was guided by the Marie-Therese design, identified with the 18th century Austrian Empress. The beautiful Marie-Therese chandelier is distinguished for its elaborate candle arms, and the concept behind ?Science & Fiction? serves as a reverence to such an age-old standard. The chandelier consists of 111 crystals, and completed by 32 lit black candles.

Gaetano Pesce introduced the ?Mediterraneo? in 2006. The unique design of this crystal chandelier is inspired from traditional old world chandelier. The chandelier is made up of 140 crystal strands, with each one comprising 87 Swarovski crystals illumined by light-emitting diodes that alter the color of the design. ?Mediterraneo? also gives off certain calming smells, and features shape shifting before the eyes of a viewer.

The radical features displayed by these crystal chandelier designs are evident of a modern transformation in the genre of chandelier motifs. The days of ?run-of-the-mill? chandeliers are definitely archaic and modern chandeliers offer a fresh look. As designers carry on experimenting with the aesthetic elements that crystals bestow, the general appearance of chandeliers in the market today will definitely bear a resemblance to any of the crystal chandelier designs mentioned in this article. As a result, an increasing number of people are guaranteed to discover the beauty that crystal chandeliers would impart to their respective home interiors.

Chandelier Lighting

Interior designers are unanimous on one thing: gone are the days when lights were meant only for illumination. These days, mood lighting is much more in vogue, and chandeliers, as well as light fixtures are well suited for this purpose. Mood lighting is a relatively new concept in interior decoration, and it means creating a particular ambience with light. This can be achieved by varying the color of the light, its intensity or the look of the lamp.

These days, more often than not, creating a mood, rather than illumination has become the primary purpose of chandelier lighting. The type of the chandelier and the nature of lighting used in it, play a deciding role in how the mood is created.

For instance, the ?party animal? can have a sleek, gleaming steel chandelier fitted with psychedelic lights that would go well with his nature. The same steel chandelier but with muted lighting will be the choice of the introvert.

For those who prefer a traditional look in their homes, a five-arm ornamental chandelier in iron would secure the look. This type of chandelier has a stately look about it and can also be used at formal dinners. Crystal chandeliers possess a conventional and opulent look. They are elegant and exude an aura of aristocracy. If you want a soft romantic look, nothing can beat a candle chandelier, given that candles themselves look warm and inviting.

Robust-looking antler chandeliers are more in tune with the outdoor-type person, a gamesman perhaps. Then, you have the rustic-looking wrought iron chandelier, and, coupled with candle lighting, you have a period piece in your hands.

The possibilities are immense with the chandelier. With little variations in the type of lighting and in the make of the chandelier itself, drastic changes can be made to the look of the room and the mood you want to project.

Chandelier Lamp Shades

There are robust-looking chandeliers in wrought iron, crystal chandeliers that are simply drop-dead gorgeous, and candle chandeliers that ooze romance. And lampshade chandeliers are dainty, pretty things. The chandelier frame is a pretty massive, with lampshades that are attached to the top. So it is obvious that this type of chandelier is meant for a large room.

The advantage of a lampshade chandelier is that a dazzling array of moods and designs may be created just by changing the shades. There is no need to dismantle the entire chandelier frame and revamp it. Also, a lampshade chandelier can be readily assembled at home.

In case of such chandeliers, the frame is usually a simple one, mostly made of wood or iron, since it is of no use to have an ornate frame that is going to be hidden by the overhanging shades. It is the type of lampshade being used that determines the look of the chandelier. The shade can be in the shape of the regular cone, a bell or circular like the Chinese-styled lampshades; it can be made of virtually anything ranging from handmade paper, silk, beads or a simple printed fabric. The lampshade may be in some sort of color, so that instead of a clear light you can have a light that diffuses a tinted glow. This can be your choice if you want mood lighting rather than incandescence.

The lampshade can be made to match the furnishings of the room so that in addition to a chandelier that is attuned to the mood of the room, you also have one that is color coordinated with the rest of the room. In fact, this is the only type of chandelier where you can coordinate so easily. When it comes to versatility, the lampshade chandelier is much more successful than other types of chandeliers.

Chandeliers ? Size Does Matter!

When many of us think of the chandelier, we imagine ?The Sound of Music? or some similar Hollywood picture featuring grand ballrooms illuminated by some elaborate and massive chandelier. You know the type?crystal for days and so many bulbs that you find yourself wondering how much it might cost to power that monstrosity for a month. But, when you remember the size of the room these ?Hollywood? chandeliers must illuminate, the light fixture actually seems appropriate. This is precisely as it should be because the size of a chandelier is relative to the room in which they are used.

Chandeliers are natural focal points of any d?cor so there is no need to buy a massive one that requires additional ceiling supports in order to hang. When you purchase an over-sized chandelier, the effect may actually cheapen the d?cor and make it seem gaudy or contrived. Remember, chandeliers convey a subtle grace and elegance. This effect is lost when you have a massive chandelier illuminating a small room. The idea is for the chandelier to naturally draw attention without becoming that mole on your aunt?s face that you just can?t seem to stop staring at.

Similarly, you certainly don?t want to buy a tiny chandelier for a grand dining room. Undersized chandeliers send the message that you ran a little short on your lighting budget and will forever look awkward and out-of-place. However, it is quite common to see tiny chandeliers in homes for the simple reason that they are some of the most expensive lighting fixtures available for homeowners to choose. But if you do have your heart set on a chandelier, how do you choose one that is sized correctly?

Many people choose to mount their chandelier above the dining room table. The dining room is a more formal area and is well-suited for chandeliers. The diameter of the chandelier is based upon the width of the dining room table. This is calculated by taking subtracting twelve inches from the total width of the dining room table. The height that the chandelier should be mounted at for rooms with 9 foot ceilings is roughly 30-33 inches from the top of the dining room table. When the ceiling is above 9 feet tall, the chandelier should hang 3 inches more (add 3 inches to the 30-33 inches figure for every foot above 9 feet) above the table for every foot. So, for a twelve foot ceiling, the chandelier should be 39-42 inches above the dining room table.

When not using the chandelier in the dining room, the size is determined by the room dimensions. There are two basic ways to calculate the diameter of a chandelier using room dimensions. In the first, the diameter is calculated by multiplying 2 inches by the total width of the room in feet. A width of 12 feet would require a chandelier with a diameter of 24 inches.

The other method is to add the dimensions of the room and convert into inches. In other words, a 10?X12? room would have a chandelier with a diameter of 22 inches. Some judgment will be necessary but a good rule of thumb is that it is best to err on the small side when you have more elaborate and traditional chandeliers and to go a little large on more modern chandeliers.

BABY NURSERY CHANDELIERS Unique Lighting Options

Adequate lighting is needed in any nursery for a baby's safety. But replace those Plain Jane fixtures and sconces with eye-popping chandeliers and you've got way more than just light. You've got eye-popping d?cor! There's just something about a great chandelier that draws the eye the minute you enter the room.

We work so hard to create a lovely baby girl's frilly nursery with ribbons, bows and lots of other convections of color and style so a chandelier is just the fluffy frosting on the cake, so to speak!

For a baby boys nursery chandeliers are rustic and in keeping with the interests of a little boy. Selections can range from sports themes to camping and the great outdoors. Rustic style fixtures will work nicely with many themes of the outdoors. Cover some existing mini shades with a buffalo plaid or burlap to make a generic black iron chandelier take on a whole new personality.

Most modern homes can handle more than one chandelier. Don't limit your decorative lighting to the center of the dining area. Always gauge the size of your accessories to the amount of space to be filled. If your nursery has a high ceiling a longer fixture would be appropriate. If you are dealing with a standard sized area, a smaller selection may be order. Keep in mind that smaller does not mean less style. A mini chandelier that suits the space is preferable over a large piece that will leave a fussy or overcrowded impression.

When shopping for a child's chandelier don't ask the salesperson to point you in the direction of kid's room accessories. Often these specialized items are overpriced and completely over-rated. It's much better to use your imagination and compliment your nursery d?cor. You really don't want an item that shouts its identity as a mass produced juvenile accessory. The lighting should give a nod to its surroundings. A courtly bow is not always necessary

For instance, for a Disney nursery theme, there's no need for the shades to be covered in cartoon characters unless the rest of the room is understated. If this is the case, there's certainly nothing wrong with an area of activity. On the other hand, too many prints or pictures within any given area would not be desirable.

Color and versatility are other considerations. It's entirely possible to start with simple black wrought iron chandeliers with white shades and get stunning results. Transform those boring white shades with some trim and Voila you have created a one of a kind nursery accessory. You will have a chandelier that can be made to work with any nursery theme.

Completely change the personality of your lighting by looping strings of imitation pearls, twinkle lights or attaching silk flowers. There are many ways to embellish a generic piece if you feel the need for a little something extra.

If you have a family heirloom then you probably should not deface it with spray paint or disturb the basics of the chandelier, but shades are easily changed and cheap to replace!

Chandeliers - What You Need To Know Before You Buy

There is no denying that chandeliers are perfect lighting choices for dining rooms. Not only do they provide excellent ambient lighting, they add an undeniable element of style and sophistication to any d?cor. But have you ever noticed how some chandeliers just do not seem to fit in with the dining room they are illuminating? Perhaps they are too big and seem to overwhelm the table. Other chandeliers just do not seem to match the other design elements of the room. To help you avoid these design faux pas, here are some tips when choosing dining room chandeliers.

Even before deciding upon the style, it is important to first determine what size of chandelier you will need. To do this, measure the width of your dining room table and then reduce this figure by 12 inches. This figure should roughly equal the diameter on most chandeliers and produce a well-proportioned effect in the room. Once you determine the ideal size, it is time to start shopping for chandeliers that will accentuate the d?cor of your dining room.

Chandeliers definitely shape the mood in any room and you should find one that accurately represents the atmosphere you wish to create. If you are looking to create a more dignified and formal atmosphere, then crystal chandeliers are definitely a great choice. However, both Mission and Tiffany style chandeliers also lend themselves to an elegant and refined dining experience so be sure to browse through these styles before making a decision. For those interested in creating a more relaxed and casual atmosphere, Rustic or Traditional style chandeliers are certain to please.

Once you have decided upon the size and style of your chandelier, you must next decide on what kind of lighting effect you are looking for. While all chandeliers direct light upwards and bounce it off the ceiling to produce a warm glow throughout the room, some are designed to produce downlight. These chandeliers better illuminate the dining room table and provide an added benefit of accent lighting for centerpiece displays. For some, it is possible to produce the downlight effect by adding miniature lamp shades around each of the light bulbs.

Finally, chandeliers must be mounted at the proper height to provide the proper aesthetic appearance as well as provide adequate illumination. In rooms with ceilings less than 9 feet tall, chandeliers should be mounted 30 inches above the dining room table. If the ceiling is 9 feet tall or more, mount the chandelier an additional 3 inches higher from the table.

A chandelier in your dining room is something that will set the tone for all of the family meals for years to come. It is important to make sure that you select one that will influence the atmosphere without completely dominating it. By using the tips provided above, you should be able to find the chandelier that will provide a dining atmosphere conducive to your tastes. Above all, remember to have fun when shopping for chandeliers and do not be in a hurry to ?just find one? because you will have to live with your decision for years to come.

Candle Chandeliers

Chandeliers have a classical elegance about them, and of all the chandeliers available, the candle chandelier ?takes the cake? because of its lighting. Whatever the make of the candle chandelier?wrought iron, crystal or antler?candles are fitted to it create a warm, romantic and inviting atmosphere. An incandescent candle chandelier, with shadows flickering around it, is truly a spectacular sight. These chandeliers also give a medieval look to the place.

More than illumination, candle chandeliers are used more as mood pieces. It is as appropriate in a stately ballroom as in the sleeping quarters. It doesn?t belong either above the dinner table or above the bathtub.

What the candle chandeliers are not suited for are cramped living quarters, sleek furniture with clean cuts and lines or furniture with hard edges. This is because the candles exude a certain softness and do not look at home with such furniture.

Candle chandeliers require a bit of maintenance in the sense that apart from the regular cleansing and polishing of the chandelier frame, one has to also ensure that molten wax from the candles does not seep into the nooks and crannies of the chandelier carvings. Accumulation of the wax will give the chandelier a mottled appearance. Another thing to consider is that if the chandelier is made up of glass or crystal, then you have to clean the surface thoroughly or the fumes from the candles will blacken them.

A candle chandelier glowing in all its exquisite beauty is a fragile object. It has a timeless appeal, but care and nurturing are necessary in order to sustain its glory.

Antler Chandeliers

Despite the raised eyebrows and reproaches from environmentalists and animal lovers, antler chandeliers continue to be in vogue. Antler chandeliers, as the name suggests, are made from the branched horns of a stag or a reindeer, shed naturally. The frame obtained in this manner must be first thoroughly cleansed, and only then can the bulbs or the candles be fitted and made into a chandelier.

It is worth realizing that the antler chandelier, however attractive it may look, does not fit in all types of rooms and ambiences. For instance, the soft appeal of candles does not blend well with the sturdy and robustness of an antler chandelier. The look of an antler chandelier is such that it is totally out of place in a feminine-type room with soft furnishings and dainty furniture. It is more suited for the masculine-type rooms and ranch houses.

The horns of the chandelier can be obtained from the mule, the elk, the moose, or the whitetail. The chandelier frame can be made from the European antler, too. These different sources mean that the antlers may vary in size, texture and weight. The shapes may vary, too, from being large, medium or small to being two or three tiered. The three-tiered chandeliers are pretty massive in size and are best suited for substantially large rooms, for coupled with their stark, bold frames, they tend to tower over every other object in the room.

The stark, no-frills frame of the antler chandelier makes it ideal for rooms sporting a minimalist look. The antler chandelier has this outdoor feel to it so that it fits well with wooden furniture, brick fireplaces and stone mantelpieces; that is to say, in rooms possessing a homely, lived-in, countryside look.

The antler chandelier is easy to maintain. It only needs regular dusting and an occasional polishing to retain its glaze. It is not surprising that the antler chandelier is rapidly gaining popularity as a light fixture that makes a bold statement.

Selecting A Chandelier

Chandeliers are special lights that have been in use for a long time. The word chandelier comes from the French word 'chandelle', which means candle. In the earlier period, these lights were made of animal fat and were attached to wooden spikes. They used to get support from the ceiling.

There was no electricity during that time, so the substitutes that were available were small sputtering tallow wall sconces, or the glow of a fireplace. Thus, chandeliers provided better lightning. They were generally used in medieval churches and abbeys in the 15th century.

Earlier, these chandeliers used to be designed for the use of the wealthy and powerful, as only they could afford them. However, it can be said that the journey of the chandelier started from homes in between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Chandeliers are considered as a symbol of status, wealth, and beauty, and have been widely used in movies to show the status of any wealthy family. It is believed that to build an impressive and complete home structure, these chandeliers are capable to develop a unique and elegant beauty.

Selecting a chandelier can be a little bit difficult. It may create confusion for you to decide on the right chandelier for your entry hall or dining room. These chandeliers come in many different varieties and sizes. Mostly, people go for shiny brass multi-arms with faux candle socket and flame-shaped bulbs.

If you are looking for an adjustable chandelier for your home and you cannot decide on the width of the chandelier, then first of all you should calculate the dimensions of the room. You just need to add the width and length of the room in feet, and then convert this figure to inches. The number you get in inches is the near about diameter of the chandelier that you need to purchase. Some people prefer oversized chandeliers for their room; they can be used design wise, but an undersized chandelier must be avoided except in the case where you are using multiples.

Secondly, the placement of the chandelier is very important, so that it shines properly. In the dining room, the chandelier should be placed exactly over the center of the table. However, the roughly estimated gap between the table and the chandelier must be about 30 inches to avoid accidents.

In order to save wall art from being positioned in the dark, you can use recessed lights. You can also use a dimmer to create a preset level while dining and for special occasions.

You can use two to three low-voltage pendants in the place of a chandelier for light distribution for long and narrow tables.

A proper choice of chandelier can develop a style and enhance the beauty of your room. Always remember that while choosing a chandelier, you must keep in mind the place where it will be installed, and its size.

Enjoy The Classic Elegance Of A Candle Chandelier

What do you think of when you hear the word chandelier? Chandeliers tend to bring images of grandeur, wealth, and royalty. And candle chandeliers take us back to another era where century old homes and fireplaces were the norm. Why not enjoy the classic elegance of a candle chandelier in your home?

Perhaps you've been lucky enough to have inherited one of the beautiful old chandeliers. If so you're a very lucky person and you need to be sure to take good care of your special gift.

However, if you are like most of us there is no inheritance so you'll need to go on the hunt to find your own perfect piece. Now that can be a lot of fun too! With so many antique shops to peruse and so many online websites selling antiques so you're sure to find the perfect fixture with a little time.

Now that said, you should be prepared to pay a fair bit for an antique piece. You might get lucky and find a really great deal but overall antique fixtures are going to cost you more than modern fixtures. But after all they are an investment.

If an antique piece is out of your budget, not to worry. There are many excellent reproduction pieces that can be purchased for a very affordable price. And they only one that's going to know your secret is you.

Don't forget antique means ornate often with intricate carvings. There's a feel about them that gives them their charm and elegance. Crystal, brass, antler, wrought iron are all great antique choices. Antique candelabras are never shiny. They must always look worn. So even if you are choosing an antique reproduction make sure it has the look of an old fixture.

Oh yes, and you can quickly create the antique look using an antiquing glaze. Just apply and then rub off with a soft cloth while the glaze is still wet. You'll have instant "old."

But an antique candle chandelier won't give the ambiance of old world charm by itself. The rest of the room must also carry the theme. So that means your furniture and other d??cor needs to also look and feel antique. Then your room will come together nicely.

Candle chandeliers are by far the most elegant and classic of all types whether they are crystal, wrought iron, antler, or brass the candles create a warm and inviting atmosphere that can be ever so romantic too! Candles are a form of lighting that bulbs just can't compete with! As the shadows flicker across the room it's a spectacular scene!

That's why they make such great mood setting pieces and the d??cor they are added to must be carefully chosen. Because candles have a softness to them a room that's filled with crisp lines and cuts is not a good choice. A small room is all not a great choice for the full effect of the candles.

They look great in a ballroom, bedroom, even over an antique tub. They can be worked into a dining room providing the d??cor is appropriate. And they look great in a room that has a soft inviting atmosphere.

Candle chandeliers do require more maintenance than electric chandeliers but they are worth every minute of it. Besides the regular cleaning and polishing you will also need to remove any wax drippings taking care to ensure they do not build up in the carvings. You'll want to clean drip cups regularly and if there are glass shades they'll need a regular cleaning as well as they will become blackened.

A candle chandelier portrays a timeless beauty that's second to none and it's a great addition to the right room so be sure to give it the consideration it deserves!

Crystal Chandeliers and Art Glass Fixtures: Why we love them!

As a traveler from the West, it might seem strange to travel all the way to Japan and include a visit to a Glass Museum featuring Venetian and Murano glass and crystal from Italy. However, like so many other museum visitors, an appreciation and attraction to sparkling luminescence and colorful display warrants the price of admission.

For over 1000 years some of the worlds' best glass makers have been making Murano glass. Passed down from master to apprentice Murano glass designed in chandeliers and light fixtures can include: clear and colored crystals, finely cut glass shaped into flowers, and marbleized, frosted, gold and silver glass shades. Some of the top lighting manufactures including: James Moder, ELK and Kalco incorporate Murano glass in a number of chandeliers and pendant fixtures. For contemporary lighting, ELK has a wonderful selection of colored glass pendants. Another manufacturer and line to check out is Shonbek's Geometrix. This lighting line by Schonbek marries the beauty of crystal with architectural detailing that is exquisite and delicate, like finding a treasure. http://www.chandeliers-and-home-lighting.com/schonbek-crystal-chandelier.htm

And while the inclusion of colored glass crystal in lighting is nothing new, it is certainly growing. Just like the fascination with stained glass lighting as witnessed for over a century with reproduction Tiffany lighting, people continue to enjoy the decorative effects of colorful glass patterned lamp shades. Collections like the above mentioned Shonbek Geometrix, include appeal for both modern lighting design and sparkling color intermixed in the fixture.

If you wonder where all this is going - well, it's not going away. If you love colorful illumination - Swarovski crystal, Murano glass, and colorful glass fixtures keep checking the collections of your favorite designers, or, new designers. They're sure to keep surprising you with some real lighting gems!

How To Choose A Chandelier Based On Style

Chandelier Style Guide

If you are building your dream home or renovating an existing one and want to add a chandelier, this guide will offer information on the different styles to help you make the right decision for your home. In today?s marketplace, you have a myriad of options when it comes to chandeliers. In fact, with so many options available it is very easy for the consumer to get confused or frustrated in the process.

Assuming you are not sure which style of chandelier you want, here are some of the many styles on the market today.

Mission Chandeliers

Mission chandeliers have a clean straight edge and simplistic appeal. Mission style chandeliers are made with stained glass, mica or other light diffusing material to produce a warm glow.

Wrought Iron Chandeliers

Not all wrought iron chandeliers are created equal. Some are powder coated to appear like they are the? real thing?. These are much less expensive than their genuine wrought iron counterparts.

Tiffany Chandeliers

Tiffany chandeliers come in multiple shapes, sizes and prices. They can be made with stained glass in a variety of colors.

Rustic Chandeliers

Rustic chandeliers are made with a more traditional lodge appeal. They incorporate metal and various colors of mica for the shade. Rustic chandeliers can also be made in copper, bronze and steel.

Antler Chandeliers

For those who prefer antler chandeliers, there are two choices: faux or authentic. Authentic antler chandeliers require the task of locating shed antlers and incorporating their varying shapes into the design. This results in a much more expensive price than the faux chandeliers, which can easily be manufactured and replicated with the same design.

Custom Chandeliers

Many chandelier manufacturers are able to create pieces to suit each individual. Chain lengths can be adjusted to hang from every type of ceiling. Chandeliers can even be constructed from your unique design. Always ask your dealer about this if you need something that isn?t on the shelf. A good example would be if you need more or less light in an area. You can request that the manufacturer build the chandelier to accommodate the wattage that you need. Another example is that chandeliers can be built from your unique design with images or text laser cut in. Custom chandeliers will be more expensive depending upon the amount of work required.

Chandeliers that are thoughtfully chosen can make a drastic difference in your home. With options from pre-made to custom, you are certain to find a chandelier to compliment your home d?cor.

Make Your Home More Beautiful With A Classy Chandelier

A chandelier can be an ideal option for lighting in your home. Not just for foyers and formal dining areas, but chandeliers can also be used to provide lighting in kitchens, bedrooms, as well as the children's room. But before you go out and look for that perfect chandelier, here are some things that you need to consider.

Criteria For Buying Chandeliers

1) Size of the chandelier: The most important element to consider is the size. If not sized correctly, a chandelier will not be able to provide lighting as desired and may well not fit into its designated spot. So here's what you need to know about sizing a chandelier.

* When choosing a chandelier for a particular room, you need to first measure the width and length of the room. Add these two measurements and the resultant sum (in inches) is how wide your chandelier should be. For instance, if your room is 14 feet wide by 16 feet long, you need to add these two numbers which gives you 30. Thus, the ideal width for a chandelier for this room will be 30 inches. However, you also need to consider the height at which the chandelier will hang. If you have low ceilings and the chandelier will hang quite low, you should buy a slightly smaller one (26-28 inches). But, if you have really high ceilings, then you should go in for a bigger one (34-36 inches). This is because the higher the chandelier, the smaller it is going to appear.

* Another important size consideration is the length. A chandelier should be at least 30 inches above the table that it will hang over. This is the optimum height as it is high enough to leave adequate room to place things under the chandelier and is low enough to provide the desired lighting. Thus, after subtracting 30 inches from the top of the table to the ceiling, and 3-4 inches for the chandelier hook, the space left can be used to decide the length of the chandelier. Once again, you can be a little flexible here. If you usually use very tall centerpieces on your table, you should choose a chandelier that is a little shorter.

2) Type of lighting required: The kind of lighting that you need is also an important criterion to consider. Here are the various types of chandeliers used to bring about different kinds of lighting:

* Ambient Lighting: If you wish to achieve ambient (general) lighting, you should go in for a big one, which has plenty of bulbs and open lights. This will ensure that the chandelier provides light for the entire room.

* Accent Lighting: If you want to place your chandelier over something specific so as to illuminate that object, or if you want it to provide you with accent lighting for specific areas, then you should choose one with spotlights and down lights. A spotlight will help you to focus lighting on special works of art and help to bring about their beauty. With down lights, you can provide accent lighting for tabletops and other specific areas.

* Diffused Lighting: Many people like to have sober diffused lighting in their home. They do not like the glare of very bright lights. If you too desire such lighting, you should choose a chandelier with uplights. An uplight will throw light on the ceiling which then gets diffused and provides a very warm glow. You can also choose a chandelier with shades as this will help to maximize the light filtering down but reduce the glare at the same time.

Thus, once you have decided on what type of lighting effect you wish to achieve, you can select a chandelier accordingly.

3) Style of the chandelier: As it is most likely going to be the center of attention in any room, it is essential that you choose a chandelier that has a look and style which is in keeping with the rest of your d?cor. You do not want to draw attention to your chandelier for all the wrong reasons after all!

While a traditional crystal chandelier can look at home in almost any setting, if you want to go in for an ornate wrought iron chandelier, or perhaps a contemporary one, it is important to first determine that such a design will match your home d?cor. Remember, while choosing a chandelier style, you want to go in for one that matches your d?cor and not contrasts with it.

In addition to the above, ease of cleaning, number of bulbs (depending on how much lighting you require), and your budget are the other factors to consider when choosing a chandelier.

Tiara of Lights: The History of Chandeliers

Chandeliers have always seemed synonymous with elegance, wealth, and beauty. Immortalized by Hollywood, one might believe that no grand house was complete, unless it had a lavish cut-crystal chandelier hanging in the formal dining room. Surprisingly, the true history of the chandelier dates back to a time long before beautiful southern belles and movie stars. In fact, the first chandeliers were quite humble, when compared to their modern counterparts.

The word 'chandelier' comes from the French word 'chandelle,' meaning candle, and the earliest forms of these lights simply consisted of a wooden cross, designed with a small spike at each end. Candles, made of animal fat in those days, were attached to each of these wooden spikes and the chandelier was then supported from the ceiling. Since there was no electricity, the only alternatives were a small sputtering tallow that could be carried about, wall sconces which only illuminated small sections of rooms, or the glow of a fireplace. The chandelier, therefore, offered a better form of lighting and was commonly used in places such as medieval churches and abbeys during the 15th century.

The first chandeliers that were designed for private use, were only found in the homes of the very wealthy or powerful. The humble farmer or common tradesman had little use for such forms of lighting, most planning their days around the rising and setting of the sun. Modest homes were often poorly constructed and tiny, the concept of a chandelier being little more than a fire hazard to such domiciles.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the chandelier began to find its way into the homes of more prosperous merchants and, as housing quality began to improve, finally into the homes of the working class. While wealthier homes boasted ornately-crafted chandeliers of brass, the more common households used wood, wrought iron, and tin sheet for their chandeliers. Additionally, the chandelier began to evolve as artisans began to experiment with light refraction, using mirrors, polished brass plates and quartz crystals.

In 1676, an English glassmaker, George Ravenscroft, introduced leaded glass to the world of lighting. Softer to work with and better able to refract light, this soon became the preferred material for chandeliers. By the late 1800's, a better method of cutting the leaded glass would be perfected by Daniel Swarovsky, of Austria. This would mark a turning point for the chandelier, where it would cease to simply be functional, but would now become a work of art.

The invention of electric lighting and better methods of manufacturing have only served to help the chandelier survive throughout the ages. Modern creators have taken this art form to new levels, creating chandeliers beyond one's wildest imaginations; glass slippers, martini glasses, chandeliers that look like thousands of glowing flower blossoms or even u.f.o.s, it would seem that the possibilities are endless. Ranging in price from hundreds to thousands of dollars, there is a chandelier for every home and, seemingly, every d?cor theme imaginable. Having outlived the test of time, it appears to be a lighting form that is bound to remain, and keep surprising us, far into the future.

Beautiful, Sparkling Chandeliers!

Beautiful, Sparkling Chandeliers!

If you want to add extra spark to rooms, consider adding chandeliers to the rooms. Chandeliers offer added elegance and charm as well as light. There are many to choose from and these can be custom made as well. A popular choice is the crystal chandelier. This beautiful piece of art is a great piece to add to a home.

If you are in the market for a chandelier, you will want to shop around to find the right one to fit your home, not only in size and shape, but in style and charm as well. There are so many choices, choices like the crystal chandeliers that sparkle and even the candle chandeliers that glow. Finding the right fit for a chandelier in your home is important depending on the function of the room, the size and color of the room, and the style of the home. Finding the right one, therefore, will take some work, but it can be done.

One option when looking for the proper chandelier for your home is to travel to home improvement stores that are so numerous these days. Often times they will have a wide selection available that you can purchase and take home that day. If you do not find what you are looking for there, try specialty stores. Items can often be ordered if not in stock. Some allow the customer to design their own to a point.

Obliviously, these may need to be ordered and will take some time to receive. Yet another option is finding the proper chandelier from home using the Internet. With so many online retailers at your finger tips, you cannot have a better chance to find the right chandler. Many of these places also offer chandelier shades and even chandelier parts just in case. Having as many options as possible will give you a great opportunity to find just the right one for your home.

Take the time to find the best chandelier for your home. Consider where it will be and the rooms purpose. Also consider the your tastes and the style of your home. Of course you will be limited by a budget, perhaps, but taking time to look in all the possible places (online, home improvement store, and specialty stores) will give you many options.

My Elderly Father Was Swinging From the Chandelier, Protecting The Dignity Of Aging Loved Ones

Often, the focus of the person providing the direct care is on protecting their loved one, and enhancing their dignity and self-esteem. As their loved ones behavior becomes unpredictable and care needs increase, it is sometimes easier to avoid telling anyone, or going out in public, such as church or visiting with friends.

The Challenge - The person providing the direct care has difficultly sharing with family and friends the actual behaviors and physical care needs of their loved one, resulting in caregiver isolation. It can be over whelming and sometimes embarrassing for the caregiver to share the details of the loved ones condition or behavior with family members, neighbors or people at church. Many family members only see what is really happening when they get together for special occasions and holidays.

The Solution - Being aware of your loved ones condition and behavior is essential in helping the direct caregiver.

1. The family may want to schedule regular visits on a rotating schedule, so they can see their loved ones behavior first hand.
• Sometimes each family member sees things in a little different way, and if they each visit at different times they can get together later to share their views of the situation.
• The direct caregiver may react differently to each family member; being more open with some.

2. The direct caregiver and/or other family members may want to join a support group. It is sometimes easier to discuss the situation with others who are in similar situations as yours.

3. Explore ways of protecting the dignity and self-esteem of your loved one:
• Explain their condition and behavior openly to others before they see the person.
• Accommodations can be made to make you and your loved one more comfortable in a public situation. For example, the Alzheimers' Association has cards that can be given to the server in a restaurant that explains your loved ones dementia and behavior.

As you visit your aging loved ones, observe for changing care needs and behaviors. Have different family members or friends visit at different times of the day and evening. Stay the night. Provide opportunities for the direct caregiver to discuss the most challenging aspect of care. Talk with friends and family members about their observations. Develop ways to protect the dignity and self esteem of your loved one when inviting people in or when taking the loved one out.
